Lynton is a small Victorian town in the Exmoor National Park which sits on top of the cliffs above the pretty waterside village of Lynmouth. Set in some spectacular scenery which is known as England’s Little Switzerland, Lynton has a good choice of shops, tea rooms and cafes making it a great base to spend a North Devon holiday.
Lynton is connected to Lynmouth by the famous Lynton and Lynmouth funicular Cliff Railway which is the steepest and highest water powered railway in the world! The station is perched on the cliff top, and at 500 feet above the lower station in Lynmouth it’s a great spot to enjoy a cream tea in the railway café.
The town is also home to the Lyn and Exmoor Museum which gives you an insight to life on Exmoor including information about the local lifeboat and narrow gauge Lynton and Barnstaple Railway.
For those who enjoy being active there are some great coastal walks in the area including the nearby Valley of the Rocks with its unusual and stunning rock formations. Or climb up onto Exmoor and hike across the open moorland passing the native Exmoor ponies on the exposed landscape.
