One of three charming holiday cottages tucked away at the end of a private, unmade farm track on a 47-acre farm, in a sunny valley, surrounded by panoramic views, woodlands, a river and rolling pastures. This lovely cottage is perfect for a family or doggie getaway in North Devon. It is within Exmoor National Park, close to pretty Parracombe village and very close to the coast, with lots of walks, some along some of the highest sea cliffs in the UK, and amazing beaches to discover.
Pack binoculars and wellies because the farm is home to red deer, bats, buzzards, owls and otters. Exmoor ponies roam the moors. There are plenty of identification books and kits for you in your cottage. Build a den, fly a kite or welly walk the river. Footpaths lead from your door to the sea at Heddon’s Mouth or onto the moors, and there are plenty of guide books and maps for you to use. Beaches, pubs and shops are extremely dog (and child)-friendly!
On the coast are the twin towns of Lynton and Lynmouth with their world famous cliff-railway linking the two towns, the Valley of the Rocks which is home to a colony of wild goats and Combe Martin with its beach and amazing network of rock pools – great for kayaking too. Exmoor Zoo, Woody Bay Steam Train, Combe Martin Wildlife and Dinosaur Park and Watermouth Castle are all just a short drive away. Take a fishing boat from Lynmouth or Ilfracombe, a day trip to wonderful Lundy Island nature reserve or surf all day at nearby Woolacombe or Croyde. Cycle the Tarka Trail. There are many more beautiful and historical places of interest nearby – Arlington Court, The Heddon Valley, Dunster Castle to name just a few. Or admire the Milky Way right here on the farm in Europe’s first International Dark Sky Reserve.
Mill Cottage is conveniently situated close to the parking area and accessed via the pretty shared garden area. The high vaulted ceiling and white-wash walls create a clean and fresh welcome into the open plan living/dining/kitchen area, where guests can cook, eat and watch television and still all be together. The living area has comfortable seating for 4 and a woodburner for the cooler seasons. A large breakfast bar with stools accompanies the well-equipped kitchen area with all you need for a self-catering family break. The main bedroom is on the ground floor along with the family bathroom. An open spiral staircase (stairgate at the top) takes you up to the mezzanine area which has two twin beds and overlooks the main living area. Outside the property guests have their own picnic table in the shared garden area and just next to this is the games barn which is well stocked for all ages.
There are lots of on-site facilities for you to enjoy including a children’s outdoor picnic/play area with a Wendy house and small climbing frame. In the shared enclosed, grassy courtyard is a shared games barn equipped with table tennis, large & small snooker tables, skittles, croquet and many more toys and games. The courtyard has garden furniture and is perfect for playing outdoor games, picnicking or a quiet read. There is a fenced orchard/meadow for dogs off lead, with a shared patio area complete with gas BBQ and chiminea, that enjoys spectacular views across the beautiful valley.
Accommodation: Ground floor: Open plan living/dining/kitchen area with gas oven and hob, fridge/freezer and dishwasher. Living area with Smart TV, DVD and wood burner. We have had a wonderful and very relaxing time here at Mill Cottage, Carey and Peter have been lovely hosts and the surroundings here are simply stunning! We hope to be back soon.
We have enjoyed a fantastic week here. Peaceful and very comfortable. Thank you for the starter pack (very useful!). We hit the "jackpot" with the weather and loved this part of Devon.
This was our first time at Mill Cottage and what a lovely we we have had! The cottage is very cosy and we have felt very much at home. Thank you Carey and Peter.
This is our fourth visit to Mill Cottage and as ever we have had a wonderful holiday. Carey and Peter are very good at being warm and welcoming and on hand top help, giving advice in places to visit. We always have a wonderful time and view Mill Cottage as our second home.
We all had a fantastic time, once again we all felt very welcome. If you want to tire out your kids-do the 7 mile round trip and walk to The Hunters Inn. Great cottage, great fun, great family!
Fantastic family holiday. The children loved the garden and we all felt very welcome here.
