Things To Do
At the coast it’s all about the coast. The beaches are what bring most people here and they are well worth the effort. Croyde is simply stunning, with great dunes and waves that surfer’s rave about. Here – like at Saunton, Woolacombe and Westward Ho!, the sea is the hero. Surf schools on every beach will show you how to kite surf, windsurf, kayak, boogie board and surf the stand-up way. Wetsuits and equipment are provided!
Walking the coast path is another favourite activity here too. It’s almost always quiet and will take you along the estuaries, over bridges, down wooded combes and along long stretches of sand. The section from Westward Ho! to Clovelly is dramatic and wild and well worth a look, whilst Hangman’s Hill at Combe Martin will be a tough but worthy climb. Adventure centres at Skern, and The Big Sheep will also give you a thrill with high ropes courses, kayaking and even coasteering if you don’t mind jumping off rocks into the sea. Tuition and safety equipment is provided!
Cycling is popular along the coast and it’s possible to cycle from Bideford along the estuary as far as Braunton, a hearty ride along a flat-ish path that’s within sight of the river the entire way. But what if it rains? There are indoor play areas at Funderzone in Barnstaple and at The Big Sheep and Milky Way near Bideford where kids can let off as much steam as they dare. Museums at Torrington and Barnstaple are also worth a visit too, although nothing beats the Shipwreck museum at Hartland Quay for quirkiness.
Surfers looking for something to do on flat days will love The Museum of British Surfing at Braunton. It’s a great new attraction with a huge collection of vintage boards and memorabilia. Exhibitions change regularly so see what’s on and you’ll be pleasantly surprised.
