Reputed to be the oldest borough in the UK, Barnstaple is the main town of North Devon. Formally a river port, it’s located on the lowest crossing point of the River Taw and is within easy reach of all the popular North Devon beach resorts of Westward Ho, Saunton Sands, Croyde and Woolacombe.
Barnstaple is a thriving market town with a traditional Pannier Market, attractive narrow streets and alleys, all waiting to be explored. The oldest part of the town is a Norman mound with remnants of the original Norman Castle Wall which can still be seen to this day.
The town has a great range of high street and independent shops and a fantastic choice of bars, cafes and restaurants. There is also a twice weekly Farmers Market which takes place in the historic Pannier Market.
Barnstaple is also perfectly positioned to explore the Tarka country and its 180-mile traffic-free trail between Braunton and Meeth, great for cycling and walking along. Just a short drive away is Exmoor National Park which gives you access to miles and miles of stunning moorland, rugged coastline, forests and rivers.
