The owners of The Hobbit’s have renovated this cute cottage to a high standard whilst maintaining many of its original features. Hidden down a quiet pedestrian lane in Appledore, it has an inglenook fireplace, low beams, deep window sills and steep open-tread stairs as well as a modern, well-equipped kitchen and chic bathroom. The front door opens into the living area (be careful of the 6ft high beams) which has comfy seating around the woodburning stove and a good-sized dining table. The kitchen is at the rear of the cottage and has a door opening into a small back yard. The family bathroom, with a shower over the bath, is also on the ground floor; whilst upstairs there are two pretty bedrooms. The Hobbit’s is in the oldest part of Appledore, which has no vehicular access, and is just a couple of minutes’ walk from the quayside along the quaint, narrow streets where many of the fishermen’s cottages date back to the Elizabethan era. The quayside has a small but interesting range of pubs, restaurants, shops and galleries. A seasonal ferry takes passengers to the pretty little village of Instow, with its sheltered stretch of sandy beach, 17th century pier and cosmopolitan yacht club. Historically celebrated for its artists and craftspeople Appledore now boasts an arts festival and the Appledore Crafts Company, an artist’s co-operative showcasing a broad range of arts and crafts from ceramics and photography to jewellery and painting. A thriving fishing and trading village since the 14th century, Appledore has been a famous boat-building centre for many years and the shipyard is still active today. In Elizabethan times, Appledore along with Bideford, was the largest importer of tobacco, and tales of smugglers and a nautical air can be found around every corner. There are pleasant walks along the sunny, south-facing quay and along the river towards Bideford and Westward Ho!
