Surfing in North Devon

Surfs Up!

With a coastline as diverse as its landscape, Devon has waves to suit all abilities and people come from all over the world to try out the surf in this beautiful part of the country.

Croyde Bay, on the north coast, is one of the most popular thanks to its hollow and powerful low tide waves which become more beginner-friendly as the tide fills in. Former English and British champion Richard Carter and Ralph Freeman are just two surfers who have contributed to Croyde's reputation in the British and European competition arena while Scott Rannochan heads the new crew, taken the sport to new heights.

Due to its north westerly facing direction, Putsborough gets a lot of "clean" surf when everywhere else isn't and when the south westerly storms batter the coastline, the locals know it's time to head to "Puts" as it's affectionally known. Waves tend to peak in size the further north you go, with the southern corner near the cliff offering an aided paddle out thanks to the rip-current.

If you want to learn to surf, head to Saunton with its vast expanse of sand. As you approach Saunton from the road, you are greeted by a three and a half mile stretch of golden sand which faces due west and is cut off to the south by the combined estuaries of the rivers Taw and Torridge. Due to the large nature of the beach, there is always plenty of room for everyone especially at low tide when the sea can retreat up to 500 metres revealing a further two and a half million square metres of sand! Backing onto the Atlantic, when there is a good swell it can produce line after line of beautiful long slow "rollers" that prove to be an irresistible draw for longboarders from all over the country.

There are a number of surf schools in the county which offer tuition and support to those who want to learn, those who haven't hit the waves for a while, and to those who just want to get out there and find the perfect wave! Equipment, suits, and boards are in abundance in this area so finding a stockist is easy for those new to the sport.
