The area around Hartland typifies North Devon’s timeless charm. Stunning sea and coastal landscapes, dramatic clifftop walks and unspoilt countryside conspire to create a real getaway-from-it-all holiday location, while character inns, beautiful beaches and historic harbours mean there’s plenty to keep visitors of all ages entertained.

The 13,000-acre Hartland Peninsula is home to many must-see places including Hartland Point, which rises 350ft above sea level and is home to a famous lighthouse, and Hartland Quay which has a small harbour and a backdrop of spectacular cliffs. Just a mile away, ancient Hartland Abbey lies across a narrow, sheltered valley and contains collections of furniture and art accumulated over many generations.

Nearby, the ancient village of Clovelly is a North Devon photographer’s delight, and a place where time stands still – traffic is banned from this privately-owned village where a cobbled main street tumbles down 400ft of solid rock to a tiny harbour and lifeboat station, both protected by an ancient stone breakwater. In bygone days goods were transported through Clovelly by donkeys; today they give rides to children while, for a small fee, a Land Rover service ferries visitors up and down the steep hill.

Further inland you can enjoy the peace and gently undulating farm and woodland around the market towns of Holsworthy and Hatherleigh, both excellent bases for exploring the whole county.
